Located in the Rothwell Heights neighbourhood in Ottawa’s East End this substantial renovation to a 1970’s bungalow entailed the reconstruction of the entire living space and the addition of a second storey for the creation of two new bedrooms and a meditation room. Modern in design, the new home is composed of a series of stucco volumes containing the public and private areas of the home. The public spaces of kitchen, dining and living rooms are housed within a single two-storey curved roof space. These rooms open up onto the backyard throug a series of patio doors and two storey windows that allow natural light to flood the space. On the exterior back of the home a cedar pergola and screen porch act as a solar shade to the large expanses of windows, and extend the living space out into the garden. Existing tree, shrubs and planting beds have been retained and enhanced, giving the home the appearance of one that has existed there for a very long time. Years later after the construction was completed, the basement was renovated to create a home theatre room.
